Why, makeup gods, WHY?!

I don’t understand… The Eye shadow x 9: MAC Amber Times nine eyeshadow palette, one of four $40 MAC Times nine palettes available now in the permanent collection and released with the Eyes on MAC collection, is soooooo my style. On paper, it has everything I typically want in a neutral eyeshadow palette. It has some matte brown transition shades; it has a sprinkling of sparkle and shimmer, thanks to the inclusion of a few shadows with Frost and Lustre finishes; and it has not one, but two of my favorite MAC eyeshadows of all time in Cork and Ricepaper.

Plus…IT has A shade CALLED KITTIES!

All this for $40, which I considered a steal based on all of the looks I saw myself doing with it.

Then I delved in…

When the four $40 MAC Eye shadow x 9: Times nine palettes launched a while back, it was with the much more expensive $85 MAC cool Neutral and warm Neutral 15-pan palettes.

In addition to Amber Times Nine, there’s also a Purple Times nine palette, Navy Times nine and a burgundy Times Nine, but yesterday I played with Amber.

The pans in these Times nine palettes are smaller than regular full-size MAC eyeshadow pans (they’re about the size of my thumb, LOL!) and hold 0.02 ounces of powder, compared to 0.05 ounces in a standard $10 pro palette refill pan.

Eye shadow x 9: MAC Amber Times nine gave me trouble…

This was my first time using one of MAC’s Times Nines, and while I was wishing to achieve neutral shadow nirvana with Amber, I didn’t. Seriously, what a letdown… I had so much trouble working with this palette.

The hard-packed shadows feel like concrete in their pans, and I have a difficult time picking them up with either a brush or my fingers. even the darker shades, which I expected to be much more pigmented, apply disappointingly sheer. I have to layer and layer and layer some much more to see them on my lids.

And the colors I know so well and love, like Cork and Ricepaper, are unlike the Cork and Ricepaper I’ve grown to love. I promise they’re sheerer here, and harder, and require much more passes with my 217 to blend.

After enough effort, I am able to build the colors up enough to see them on my lids, but it takes a lot of layers. You can certainly get there, but do you want to? — that’s the question. With so numerous other fantastic MAC shadows out there, is it worth the price and effort?

For me, I would say no. I haven’t used the other MAC Times nine palettes yet, and I’ve still got high hopes for those, but I can’t recommend this one over one of the 15-pan palettes, like cool Neutral or warm Neutral, or the Nordstrom Naturals palette, despite all of them being considerably much more expensive.

No, to nie je presne anketa. It’s much more of a continuously evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always delighted in reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you delight in reading mine.

How comfortable are you posing for photographs?
Most of the time I’m pretty comfortable, although to be honest…it partly depends on who’s taking the picture. I can’t lie! I have control issues.

If I’m taking the pictures myself, of myself (myself of myself?), then I’m fine because I can set everything up exactly the way I want, but when someone else is the photographer, in some cases I’m like, “Here, why don’t you tilt the video camera like this?” or, “How about we face the light from this angle instead?” or “Let’s relocation everyone about a foot to the left so the garbage can isn’t in the shot.”

Honestly, I typically end up just grabbing the video camera and taking the pictures myself, which is why I’m rarely in a lot of group pictures.

How often do you wear hair extensions?
Rarely, if ever. I’ve worn them a couple of times (mostly after I’ve chopped off my hair), but I don’t like the extra weight on my head.

I do eventually want to try some clip-on bangs, though! I’m still searching for a natural-looking pair that I like.

If you could jump on a plane best now and go charm shopping for 24 hours anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Ooh! So tough. It’s a tossup between Milan and Japan. On my brief trip to Milan a few years ago I saw a lot of cool charm stuff over the course of just half a day walking around, so I’m sure if I had a full 24 hours I’d find some real gems.

But I think I’d rather go to Japan because I’ve never been there before. I’d stock up on face masks, brushes, false lashes and as numerous strange products as I could find. Either way, fun!

Pigtails on adults: a do or a don’t?
Generally, a don’t for me, although I was guilty of wearing them with reckless abandon in the late ’90s (*cringes*). I wore them to clubs and to class, but never to work. I do have to say that I have seen some gals (and some guys) who can legitimately pull off the look, but it’s a rare thing.

Good morning, sweet friend. I’m having one of those Monday mornings where I feel like I need to treat myself with extra tenderness.
